Independent Scientific Hydraulic Fracturing Study Validates California’s Strict Oil Production Standards

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Following the release of an independent scientific study on hydraulic fracturing in California by the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) and Berkeley Lab, Californians for Energy Independence issued this statement:

“This sound science, coupled with the most comprehensive oil regulations in the nation, ensures California remains on a path of responsible production to secure our state’s energy needs. Producing oil and gas here, under our toughest-in-the-nation standards, creates affordable energy for Californians and reduces our dependence on foreign oil while protecting quality jobs and revenue for vital programs,” said Sabrina Lockhart, communications director for Californians for Energy Independence.

Earlier this week, USA Today issued an editorial touting the vast economic benefits of responsible hydraulic fracturing.

Other significant findings from today’s CCST report include:

  • No evidence was found that chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing have harmed the environment.
  • No evidence was found that hydraulic fracturing in California has contaminated groundwater.
  • Fluids injected into oil formations during hydraulic fracturing operations are not likely to cause earthquakes.
  • 95 percent of the hydraulic fracturing in California occurs in Kern County with nearly all limited to just four oil fields. If hydraulic fracturing expands in California it will most likely be in the existing oil fields of Kern County where the technology has been used for many decades.
  • The amount of water used in hydraulic fracturing operations is small compared to other human water uses.
