A representative from California’s Department of Conservation told the crowd there could be 13 billion gallons of oil sitting in the rock or shale that runs from Bakersfield to Monterey. And it runs through the western part of Madera County. “Madera is part of the state that hasn’t historically had oil and gas production. But if that Monterey shale, if the oil and gas operators are able to figure out how to produce from it, this may be an area where that happens,” said Jason Marshall with the Department of Conservation.
